BEFORE YOU SIGN

How to check a solar installer and quote before you pay.

Check the installer’s identity, current registration, exact equipment, installation scope and written terms before an advance. An official listing is one check; it does not replace a site assessment or contract review. Use the checklist below to find what still needs an answer.

Five checks before you pay anything.

  1. Who are you paying?

Match the contracting company, invoice and payment recipient.

  2. Is the installer registered for your route?

Check the current official entry for the right state and DISCOM.

  3. What equipment are you getting?

Ask for exact models, quantities and documentary scheme compliance.

  4. What work is actually included?

Get design, safety, civil work, meter charges and exclusions in writing.

  5. What happens if work is incomplete?

Read payment, warranty, delay, refund and service responsibilities.

Verify registration at the source.

Use the National Portal’s state-wise vendor directory and your DISCOM’s current process. Match the business name and service area to your quote; ask the authority about mismatches. The UPNEDA approved-firms directory provides an additional UP cross-check (choosing a vendor in UP). Directory membership does not guarantee workmanship, price, subsidy approval or future service.

The National Portal blocked automated access during research. The directory link is corroborated by Tata Power-DDL; verify the live entry yourself. SolarKhoj does not issue vendor approvals or trust scores.

UPNEDA

Approved firms by district

Check company identity and current area listing. A listing is not a guarantee of workmanship.

Checked: Official source

Ask for a system specification, not just a panel brand.

Modules

Model, quantity, wattage, serial records and applicable DCR/ALMM evidence.

Inverter

Model, AC rating, protection features and an explicit description of any backup provision.

Mounting structure

Materials, roof suitability, fixing method and waterproofing responsibility.

BOS & electrical protection

Cabling, AC/DC protections, earthing, lightning protection where applicable and test records.

DCR concerns domestic modules and cells for the relevant CFA. ALMM List-I covers modules and List-II covers cells; check exact models, current dates and applicability notices. Ask a qualified installer to document the design and compliance.

YOUR WORKING CHECKLIST

Tick only what is clear in writing.

Use your actual quotation and supporting documents. Unticked items are questions to resolve. This is your own working record, not a SolarKhoj inspection or vendor rating. It resets when you leave or reload.

Five questions worth sending before an advance.

Use these with your installer. Add the specific gaps you found above.

  1. Please share the complete itemised price, taxes and exclusions before subsidy.
  2. Which exact module and inverter models are included, and what compliance records will I receive?
  3. Who handles the roof assessment, electrical tests, DISCOM work and application corrections?
  4. Please separate the product, performance and workmanship warranties, exclusions and service costs.
  5. What are the payment, cancellation and refund terms if installation or subsidy is delayed?

Still need help reading an offer?

You can start a conversation with SolarKhoj. The draft below asks for help; your checklist and quotation are not attached or sent. Share only what you choose in WhatsApp.

Slow down when the answer stays vague.

Brand promises without model numbers

Ask for datasheets and substitution terms. A brand name is not a complete specification.

Guaranteed subsidy or a zero bill

Ask for written conditions and official evidence. Consumption, eligibility and utility rules affect outcomes.

Pressure for an immediate large advance

Resolve the written scope, payment milestones and refund terms before committing.

Unclear service responsibility

Identify who handles warranty claims, labour/travel costs and escalation.

These are reasons to ask for clarification, not a finding of fraud. A completed checklist is not a safety inspection or endorsement.

Know what each check can tell you.

Does registration mean SolarKhoj recommends the installer?

No. Registration is checked with the responsible authority. SolarKhoj's checklist helps you organise questions; it does not certify a vendor.

Does 'Made in India' prove DCR and ALMM compliance?

No. DCR concerns domestic modules and cells for the relevant CFA. ALMM lists identify models/manufacturers, with current applicability notices. Ask for evidence tied to exact equipment and dates.

Can I compare quotes just by the per-kW price?

First align module capacity, inverter rating, structure, protections, taxes, metering work and warranty/service scope. A lower figure can exclude work another quote includes; the two-quote example shows how.

How much advance should I pay?

There is no official percentage to rely on. Tie each payment to a defined stage, such as material delivery, installation and commissioning, in the written agreement; avoid paying the full amount before work starts; and ask what is refunded if the project is cancelled or the subsidy is delayed. If a loan funds the system, match the milestones with the lender. The installation process shows which stages exist.

What warranty terms should a quotation state?

Each layer separately: the module product and performance warranties, the inverter warranty, the installer's workmanship cover and, for scheme installations, the system warranty and maintenance terms in the model consumer–vendor agreement. The warranty guide explains what each one covers and who pays during a claim.
