A practical first look

Rooftop Solar Cost & Size Calculator

Use your monthly electricity units to explore a starting solar size, approximate generation and an indicative market cost. The current planning baseline is for homeowners in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi NCR. See which subsidy and savings details still need checking, then use the estimate to prepare for a site assessment and an installer quote.

Your location

Enter 6 digits, or continue with a region. Your PIN stays in this page’s memory.

The current research baseline covers UP and Delhi NCR. A PIN does not identify your electricity provider here.

Your electricity use

Units usually give a better sizing estimate. Use an average month; divide a two-month bill’s units and amount by two.

Electricity usage mode

Look for ‘units consumed’ or ‘kWh’ on your bill.

Use the same month as your units, excluding arrears or deposits.

Your property

Individual homes are the main supported path. Shared roofs, societies and businesses need a different assessment.

Optional roof & connection details

The approved load on your electricity connection, usually printed on the bill. Leave blank if you don’t know.

These details help flag questions for a site visit. We do not apply unverified roof costs or shade deductions.

A clearer starting point for solar

Add your region and monthly units to see a starting system size, approximate generation and an indicative cost range.

Start with units. A bill amount alone cannot tell us how much electricity you use.

See what’s known. Unverified subsidy and savings stay clearly marked.

Indicative cost by size

What does rooftop solar cost?

Indicative installed cost before subsidy, from a mid-2026 market reference: ₹65,000–₹75,000 for 1 kW, ₹1.1–₹1.3 lakh for 2 kW, ₹1.5–₹1.8 lakh for 3 kW, ₹2.4–₹2.8 lakh for 5 kW. Equipment, roof work, taxes and electrical scope can move your quotation outside these ranges.

System sizeIndicative installed costPlanning generation
1 kW₹65,000–₹75,000≈ 100 units/month
2 kW₹1,10,000–₹1,30,000≈ 200 units/month
3 kW₹1,50,000–₹1,80,000≈ 300 units/month
5 kW₹2,40,000–₹2,80,000≈ 500 units/month
  • A secondary-source market estimate, not a quotation or a SolarKhoj price. Ask each installer for an itemised written quote.
  • Subsidy is separate. Under standard PM Surya Ghar rates, central support for an eligible home is capped at ₹78,000; eligibility and release are checked separately, so no net price is shown here. If you plan to borrow, read the questions to ask before a solar loan.
  • Only these sizes have a researched range. Prices for 4 kW, 6 kW or larger systems are not interpolated.
  • Generation uses the planning baseline of 100 units per kW per month for UP and Delhi NCR; it is not a measured yield.

The method, in plain language

How the estimate works

A starting point you can question and refine, with the assumptions visible.

  1. 01

    Size follows your usage

Monthly units are divided by a research baseline of 100 units per kW per month. The result maps to the nearest supported size, with ties going to the smaller size. Usage beyond the supported range needs custom sizing. The size comparison shows the supported sizes side by side.

  2. 02

    Cost stays a range

Each supported size has its own researched installed-cost range. We do not invent prices between sizes. Current local quotations can differ from this mid-2026 market reference, so compare quotations on the same scope.

  3. 03

    Subsidy needs its own check

Eligibility depends on more than capacity. The subsidy guide publishes the checked scheme rates, but no numeric subsidy rule is active in this calculator, and unknown support is never entered as zero. Cost after subsidy waits until eligibility can be verified.

  4. 04

    Generation is not bill savings

Bill divided by units gives an approximate effective rate. It may include fixed charges. Rupee savings and payback remain unavailable until local electricity-credit treatment is supported; net metering explains why.

Evidence

Sources & verification

Evidence and publication are separate decisions. A research estimate can help with planning without becoming a verified local quotation or an official entitlement.

Research record

Independent verification pending · Record reviewed:

Product buckets, not a technical standard. Within the supported range, select the nearest size; ties go to the smaller size. Outside the range, require custom sizing. No price interpolation.

No approved subsidy source is active in the calculation. The official PM Surya Ghar portal is the place to check current scheme information; this link does not indicate that your eligibility has been verified.

What the estimate doesn’t include

A roof survey, structural design, equipment selection, electrical upgrades and quote-specific work still need an installer’s assessment. Your sanctioned load, metering and electricity provider’s rules also matter. This tool does not model batteries, financing, maintenance, equipment degradation or long-term savings.

Prepare for a useful site visit

  1. Have recent electricity bills ready, including units and billing periods.

  2. Confirm roof access, ownership and any required permissions.

  3. Ask for an itemised quote covering equipment, installation, taxes, metering and warranties.

  4. Check subsidy eligibility and application steps separately from the installation price.

This calculator provides an indicative estimate. Actual generation, pricing, subsidy eligibility and savings depend on your property, electricity connection, equipment and current scheme rules.

Questions

Solar calculator questions

How do I know how many kW of solar I need?

Start with average monthly units from recent bills. This calculator divides those units by a research generation baseline and chooses a nearby supported size. A site assessment must check usable roof space, shade and your electricity connection before final design.

Are monthly units better than the electricity bill for sizing?

Yes. Units measure electricity use directly. The rupee amount also depends on tariffs, slabs, fixed charges, fees and billing periods. A bill amount or range alone does not produce a reliable system size here.

How accurate is this solar calculator?

It gives a planning estimate, using a research baseline rather than a site-specific generation model. Confidence improves when roof and connection details are known, but it is not an engineering design, installation quotation or financial guarantee.

Does the estimate include subsidy?

No. The subsidy guide lists the official central and Uttar Pradesh rates checked on 6 October 2026, but this calculator does not apply them: eligibility, equipment conditions and payment depend on details it cannot verify. Cost after subsidy is therefore withheld, and unknown state benefits are never treated as zero. Confirm eligibility on the official PM Surya Ghar portal before applying.

Why is solar cost shown as a range?

The installed-cost data is a secondary-source market estimate. Panels, inverters, mounting, roof conditions, taxes and electrical work can change the quote. Ask each installer for the equipment and work included in the final price.

Can my solar system be larger than my sanctioned load?

Your sanctioned load is the approved capacity of your electricity connection. If the calculator’s usage-based option exceeds the load you entered, it stops the recommendation and asks for a connection check. Your electricity distribution company (DISCOM) must confirm the applicable local rules.

Will solar make my electricity bill zero?

Not necessarily. Fixed charges can remain, and solar electricity used at home or exported to the grid may receive different billing treatment. This calculator withholds rupee savings until an appropriate electricity-credit model is verified.

Do I need a site survey before installing solar?

Yes. Roof condition, structure, orientation, shade, wiring, meter arrangements and permissions need assessment. Shared roofs and housing societies also require an agreed approach to roof rights and common electricity use. The survey is one stage of the installation process.

Where do I find monthly units on my electricity bill?

Look for units consumed, or kWh, for the billing period. It is often the difference between the current and previous meter readings. If a bill covers two months, halve it for a monthly figure, and look at both a summer and a winter bill because air-conditioning changes usage a lot. The sizing guide explains why units matter more than the rupee amount.

Why might a real system produce more or less than this estimate?

The estimate uses a planning baseline of about 100 units per kW per month for UP and Delhi NCR. Real output varies with shade, roof direction and tilt, dust, heat, season and inverter losses, and an on-grid inverter stops during a power cut. Ask the installer for a site-specific generation estimate with its assumptions written into the quotation.
